Custom Screening Lists

Beta

Custom screening lists are available only when Strise enables them for your team.

Custom screening lists let your team screen companies against lists of company names you upload yourself, such as companies you will not do business with. Strise compares the companies you look at against every name on your lists. A hit can add points to the company's calculated risk, raise a flag, and send a monitoring alert.

A custom screening list is your own list. It is not a sanctions list, and a hit on it is not a sanctions hit. Strise screens sanctions separately, as described in Sanctions Settings.

Lists hold companies only. Private persons are not screened against them.

Managing Your Lists

Find your lists under Settings → Custom screening lists, in the Screening group. Everyone on the team can see the lists and their names. Creating, uploading, renaming and deleting a list needs permission to change settings.

The table shows each list's Name, the number of Names on it, the current Version, the Last upload and who uploaded it.

Creating a List

  1. Select New list.
  2. Give the list a name, up to 256 characters.
  3. Upload a CSV or XLSX file with the company names in a column called "Name". Download template gives you a CSV file with that column.
  4. Select Save.

Strise also recognises the column headers "Company name", "Company", "Navn", "Firmanavn", "Namn" and "Selskap", in any capitalisation. Only the names are read; other columns are ignored.

A list holds between 1 and 100,000 names. Names that are the same apart from capitalisation or spacing count as one name.

The file is rejected when:

  • it has no column with one of the headers above,
  • it has no company names,
  • it has more than 100,000 names, or
  • it is not a readable CSV or XLSX file.

Uploading a New Version

To update a list, open its menu and select Upload new version, then upload the full list again. The new version replaces the current one in screening. Strise keeps every earlier version: Version history shows when each version was uploaded, by whom and how many names it held, and you can open an earlier version to see its names.

A name that stays on the list from one version to the next keeps its hits and the decisions your team made on them. You do not have to review those hits again.

Renaming and Deleting a List

Rename changes the name the list shows under.

Delete removes the list and every version of it. It cannot be undone. Strise also removes the list from your calculated risk settings, saved as a new settings version, and from any open settings draft. Review due dates are recalculated afterwards, since the deleted list no longer adds risk points.

Screening Scope

The Screening scope section on the same page decides which companies are screened against your lists. Because lists hold companies only, only companies are screened.

OptionWhat is screenedDefault
The company itselfThe company you are looking atOn
Beneficial ownersCompanies among its beneficial owners, with reasons you can excludeOff
Active rolesCompanies holding an active role, with roles you can excludeOff
ShareholdersCompanies owning at least the threshold you set, from 5% to 100%Off, 5% threshold
Direct subsidiariesCompanies it owns directly at or above the threshold you set, from 0% to 100%Off, 5% threshold

Under Shareholders, Include companies on the ownership path also screens a company in an ownership path that together meets your threshold, even when its own stake is below it.

The scope applies to calculated risk, flags and monitoring alerts alike. Save it from the bar at the bottom of the page. Changes can also be staged in draft mode.

How Names Are Matched

Strise compares the company's name, including the other names it is screened under, with each name on the list. Legal forms such as "AS" or "Ltd" are left out of the comparison. A name is a hit when it is at least 90% similar to a name on the list. The threshold is the same for every team and cannot be changed.

Only names are compared. Each name on a list gives at most one hit per company: the closest match.

Reviewing Hits

Hits appear on the Custom screening lists card in the entity's PEPs & Sanctions tab. The card screens against the lists in your calculated risk score levels (see Calculated Risk); a list in no score level is screened only by monitoring. The card lists every screened company with a hit, the name on the list it matched, the list it is on, and the name it matched as.

The screenshot shows fictional demonstration data.

Select Review to decide a hit:

  • Confirm as a match: the company is the one on the list. The hit keeps counting towards calculated risk.
  • Mark as false positive: the company is a different one with a similar name. The hit stops counting towards calculated risk and no longer raises a flag.

A comment is optional. You can decide several hits at once; the same decision and comment are recorded on each of them. Select Reopen decision to undo a decision, which makes the hit count again.

The card groups hits under Needs input, Confirmed match and Confirmed false positive. A hit with no decision counts towards calculated risk until someone marks it as a false positive. Decisions are recorded in the entity's activity log.

Deciding hits is a separate permission, and Strise enables it for your team separately from the lists themselves. Without it, hits still show and count, but you cannot confirm or dismiss them.

In Review

Company reviews have a Custom screening lists section with a Custom screening list hits row. The row shows the same hits as the card, and you can decide them from the review the same way. A decision made in the review applies everywhere the hit shows. The row is on by default. Turn it off under Custom screening lists in your review settings.

Calculated Risk

Custom screening lists are a risk category in Calculated Risk Settings, for companies only. The category adds no points until you assign lists to a score level, and only lists in a score level are screened on the entity page. See Custom Screening Lists in the settings reference for how scoring works.

The Calculated risk card on the entity page shows the category as Custom screening lists, with the points it added and the lists that were hit.

Flags

A hit raises the flag Custom screening list hit when the score level its list sits in has a highlight colour. The flag takes that colour. A level without a highlight colour adds points but raises no flag, and a hit marked as a false positive raises none.

A person tied to a company with a hit can inherit the flag Associated company with custom screening list hit. This is off by default. Turn it on under Settings → Flags on persons. See Flags: What's New for how flags work.

Monitoring Alerts

For monitored companies, Strise screens against all your team's lists, including lists that are not in a score level. An alert is created when a monitored company, or a company in its screening scope, gets a new hit or loses one. The alert shows the name on the list, the list, the name it matched and how similar the two are.

Uploading a new version creates alerts only for the hits it adds or removes. Names that stay on the list create no new alerts.

Alerts are on by default once your team has custom screening lists. See Custom Screening List Alert Settings to turn them off or have them emailed. Alerts are also sent to webhooks and are available over the Connect API.
