Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs)

A Politically Exposed Person (PEP) is an individual who holds or has held a prominent public function. PEPs are considered higher risk for money laundering and corruption due to their position and influence.

Foreign PEPs are classified as high risk by default, as their activities may be harder to monitor and their exposure to corruption risk is elevated.

RCAs are individuals who have a close business or personal relationship with a PEP. This includes family members, known close associates, and individuals who share beneficial ownership of legal entities or arrangements with a PEP.

Relation Labels

When a PEP hit is generated through a family relationship, the relation type is shown alongside the match. In-law relations are labelled explicitly:

  • Child-in-law of — the PEP is the spouse of the matched person’s child.
  • Parent-in-law of — the PEP is the parent of the matched person’s spouse.

This makes the chain of relation immediately readable in the alert feed and in the PEP details panel, without needing to expand the underlying graph.

Screening Sources

Strise screens against two PEP databases:

  • Trapets — Strong Nordic coverage (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland).
  • Dow Jones — Global coverage, including the Nordics.

By default, Strise routes hits based on the countries tied to each entity: Trapets is used when there are Nordic connections and Dow Jones when there are non-Nordic connections. Entities with connections to both are screened against both sources. You can opt out of country-based routing and always screen against a specific source (or both) from PEP Settings. Dow Jones coverage requires a feature toggle because of the additional cost.

Available Details

When a PEP or RCA match is identified, the following information is available in Strise:

  • Name — Full name of the PEP or RCA
  • Role — The public function or position held
  • Address — Registered address where available
  • Date of Birth — Used for identity verification and disambiguation
